About the Society In the autumn of 1966 a small group of enthusiasts met to discuss the idea of forming a dog training club serving the Aylesbury area. The society was officially inaugurated in February 1967 and has continued to flourish ever since, largely due to the enthusiasm and dedication shown by the members. We are a Kennel Club registered society. Our officials and instructors give their time and services voluntarily; their reward is the satisfaction of running a successful society. Although our Instructors all have long experience of handling dogs, none of them is a veterinary expert. We are an all-breeds society, and over the years many unusual breeds have passed through our hands. The Society has three main sections. The Obedience Section is the backbone and mainstay of the Society, and besides Wednesday evening training we are members of the Chiltern Junior Obedience League, and we compete in matches during the year in our local area. In May each year we run an Open Obedience Show, attracting competitors from around the country. We have a small but enthusiastic Working Trials Section for members interested in this discipline. In the past we ran an Open Working Trial every January, again attracting competitors from round the country. Our Agility Section is very active, with training taking place under cover on Thursday evenings. We run an Open Agility Show each August. Offers of help from members are always welcome to help run these events. Members' dogs must be competent in basic control before joining any of the three sections, and to this end we run basic 8 week starter courses and puppy socialisation for new members with new puppies, or older dogs coming to formal training for the first time. These courses are also open to existing members with new puppies. Our Instructors are always present at the hall on Wednesday evenings and will be only too happy to answer any questions you may have on dog related problems. We cannot, however, give specific veterinary advice. Each July, usually on the first Sunday of the month, we hold our annual family Fun Day and barbecue, where members can enjoy a day out with their family and dogs, and compete in fun exercises with a novel twist. There is also a Junior Challenge for the children. In conjunction with the Fun Day we also run the Kennel Club Good Citizen bronze award tests. Tests for the Silver and Gold standards are held separately each year, normally in April. Puppy Foundation Assessments for young dogs under twelve months of age are conducted throughout the year. The Society runs a Demonstration Team, which performs by invitation at selected local events during the summer months, raising money for animal related charities. Every Autumn the three sections, Obedience, Working Trials and Agility, hold their Members' Annual Competitions (formerly known as Progress Tests) and we encourage members give support to each other in each section. In December we hold our annual Presentation Quiz Evening, when the the society's thirty odd trophies covering all aspects of our activities are awarded, and we hold a quiz to raise money for animal related charities. We also have a newsletter, Recall, which periodically carries reports on activities, information on the society's forthcoming activities, and contributions of interest from members. The society runs a lending library for members of books and videos relating to dogs, their training and welfare. On
an occasional basis we have visiting speakers on various topics, which in the
past have included new training methods and canine first aid. Many of our members compete on a regular basis with their dogs in Obedience, Working Trials and Agility, in all parts of the country. Between them they have won many awards, and some of our more senior members are national judges, between them covering all three disciplines.
